Why Detection-Only Matters for Print Production

By Think Neverland

Automated PDF correction sounds appealing. Upload a file, get a fixed file back, send it to press. No human review, no intervention. But the reality of automated correction in print production is more complicated than it appears.

The risk of automated correction

PDF is a complex format. A single file can contain embedded fonts, ICC color profiles, transparency groups, overprint settings, spot color definitions, and page geometry boxes — all interacting with each other. Changing one element can cascade into unexpected results.

Consider a common scenario: a preflight tool detects an RGB image in a CMYK workflow and automatically converts it. The conversion uses a default profile that does not match the print condition. The blue in the customer's logo shifts. Nobody notices until the job is on press and 10,000 sheets are printed.

Or consider transparency flattening. A tool detects transparency that is incompatible with PDF/X-1a and flattens it automatically. The flattening creates white hairlines at the boundaries of transparent objects. These hairlines are invisible on screen but visible in print.

Detection gives you the information without the risk

LintPDF takes a different approach. We run 250+ Checks across your file and tell you exactly what we find. Fonts that are not embedded, spot colors in the wrong workflow, images below minimum resolution, missing bleed, non-compliant ICC profiles, barcode quiet zones that are too narrow.

Every finding includes a severity level. Error findings are blockers — issues that will almost certainly cause production problems. Warnings are potential issues that may need attention depending on the workflow. Info findings are informational — things worth knowing but unlikely to cause problems.

You get the complete picture. You make the decisions. Your files stay exactly as they were.

When correction makes sense

There are cases where automated correction is appropriate — standardizing page sizes, embedding missing fonts from a known font library, converting color spaces with verified ICC profiles in a controlled environment. But these corrections require deep domain knowledge, verified profiles, and careful testing.

LintPDF gives you the detection layer. Correction, when it is needed, should happen in tools and workflows where humans verify the results before production.

The bottom line

Detection is the foundation. It is the one step in a preflight workflow that has zero risk of damaging customer files. Start with detection, review the findings, then decide how to handle each issue in the context of your specific production workflow.
